CCF Winter Conference

The California Chiropractic Foundation (CCF) will conduct its annual HSF/Winter Conference on the weekend of January 22-23, in San Jose, and the weekend of February 12-13, in Los Angeles. The seminar, "Surviving the System," will have three separate four-hour modules, and has been submitted to the state board for continuing education credits.

Module A focuses on managed care and how it operates in the workers' compensation environment. R.T. Donahue, DC, and Dan Nusser, DC, will teach participants how recent changes in workers' compensation will affect the managed care system as well as the new treating physician requirements. Other topics include: quality assurance, group health care environments, and reimbursement arrangements.

Module B gives a first-hand account of how percipient witness and depositions will affect doctors of chiropractic. This module will be presented by Shawn Steel, Esq.

Module C featuring speakers Craig Little, DC and David Willat, DC, examines the latest changes in the workers compensation fee schedule. Participants will learn about the different types of reimbursement according to the new reforms and how to bill under the new treatment fee schedule.

The Winter Conference will also offer QMEs a six-hour refresher course. John Hemauer, DC, and James Gentry, DC, will teach participants how workers' compensation reform affects them, how to use the new medical-legal fee schedule, and how treating physicians differ from AME/QMEs. The course will also review new practice time requirements, conflict of interest issues, and IMC re-appointment procedures. The refresher course has been submitted to the state board for six hours of continuing education credit.

For more information about the HSF/Winter Conference call the CCF at (916) 387-0177.

California State Assemblyman Visits LACC

Bert Margolin, a California state assemblyman who is noted for his skepticism of the chiropractic profession, visited the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC) in late October at the invitation of the California Chiropractic Association (CCA).

Assemblyman Margolin was welcomed to the campus by LACC President Reed Phillips, DC, PhD, DACBR, and Lawrence Tain, DC, member of the Board of Regents of LACC. Accompanied by CCA President Bradley Sullivan, DC, and CCA Executive Director Mr. Garrett Cuneo, Assemblyman Margolin was given a complete tour of the Whittier campus. He asked many questions on the educational process as well as making comparisons to chiropractic education and traditional medical education. LACC officials said that they felt Margolin was impressed with the college.

"Mr. Margolin said he wished to stay on campus longer than he had originally scheduled, which indicated to me that he was impressed with what he had seen," said Dr. Phillips. "He was clearly interested in investing the time to get the information he needed."

Earlier this year, Mr. Margolin authored and submitted a regulatory bill to the Assembly Health Committee which would limit chiropractors' scope of practice. Although not always in agreement, the California Chiropractic State Board of Examiners and the CCA worked together to resolve the challenge created by his action. (See "Calif. Board Adopts Emergency Regulations under Threat" in the Sept. 1 issue.)

"Today represents a real triumph for chiropractic, Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, and the California Chiropractic Association," said CCA President Dr. Sullivan after Mr. Margolin's visit. "The more Mr. Margolin knows about chiropractic, the more likely it is that he will become a chiropractic proponent."
