Society of Chiropractic Management Consultants Formed

By Editorial Staff
On May 14, 1991 in Dallas, Texas a decision was reached by several leading chiropractic practice management consultants to move forward with the incorporation of an independent organization, the Society of Chiropractic Management Consultants (SCMC).

The purpose of the society is to assure the chiropractic profession the availability of ethical, competent, and professional practice management, by establishing standards and a code of ethical conduct for its members.

This new, non-profit society, unanimously adopted a constitution and by-laws, a code of ethics, and set guidelines for membership. Further, several major issues which are of concern to our national and state associations, chiropractic colleges, and the profession at large were discussed at great length.

Among the items agreed upon, pending ratification at the next meeting, are that a member of this society:

  • Shall not sign to a practice management agreement or contract any student until after their graduation from chiropractic college.

  • Shall operate and charge on a fee for service basis, rather than on a fee schedule based on a percentage of services rendered or income.

  • Shall not promote any specific religion(s) nor provide religious counseling of any kind as part of the management service.

  • Shall not engage in self-dealing or conflicts of interest with their clients.

  • Shall not engage in misleading or deceptive advertising nor shall they imply or give a guarantee of results to their clients.

The full text, additional guidelines and objectives of the SCMC will be released shortly. Applications for membership will be accepted prior to the SCMC's next meeting to be held in Dallas, Texas on October 7, 1991.

Formal elections of officers were conducted and committee members were appointed: president -- Dr. Richard Vincent (Chiropractic Health Care Systems); vice president -- Dr. Charles Gibson (Gibson Management Consultants); secretary/treasurer -- Dr. Lawrence Markson (Markson Management Services).

Advisory board: Dr. Charles Ward (Ward Management Services); Dr. David Singer (David Singer Enterprises); and Dr. Noel Lloyd (Five Star Management).

Membership committee: Dr. Charles Gibson (Gibson Management Consultants); Dr. David Kats (Kats Management Services); Mr. Brian Koslow (Koslow Practice Management); and Dr. William Harris (Practice Consultants).

The essence of the SCMC is to self-regulate the practice consultant industry and set standards of excellence that will benefit the image of doctors of chiropractic and the chiropractic profession.

Society of Chiropractic Management Consultants

Editor's Note: This is an event that will note only affect all future relationships between chiropractic consultants and their clients, it will also enhance the image of the chiropractic profession as a whole. Serious problems that have occurred between some consultants and their clients have become well known to the public.

Every practice management consultant in the chiropractic profession should become a member of the SCMC. Every client (present or future) of a practice consultant should be asking the question, "Is your company a SCMC member?"

Only with ethics and standards that are clearly stated can clients know what to expect. We applaud the nine pioneering consultants that have established the SCMC and their commitment to professionalism.
