Academic Consortium Names NBCE's Elliott to Board of Directors
Dr. Horace Elliott, executive vice president of the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE), is a newly elected board member of the Academic Consortium of Complementary and Alternative Health Care (ACCAHC). Founded in March 2004 as an initiative of the Integrated Health Policy Consortium and now operating as an independent, nonprofit entity, the ACCAHC's stated mission is "to create and sustain a network of national complementary and alternative medicine educational organizations and agencies, which will promote mutual understanding, collaborative activities and interdisciplinary health care education." The organization's board of directors includes naturopathic doctors, massage therapists, physical therapists and doctors of chiropractic, among others. Elliott, executive vice president of the NBCE since 1986, joins Drs. Frank Nicchi, Reed Phillips (founding chair) and David Wickes as chiropractic representatives on the ACCAHC board.
National Board Hosts Student Leadership Forum
In other NBCE news, Dr. Vernon Temple, board president, welcomed 15 student leaders to the 7th Annual Student Leadership Forum at NBCE headquarters on Jan. 22. The forum introduced students to the foundations of testing including the chiropractic practice analysis and the Delphi study; written exam development process and the importance of test committees; the design, development and scoring process for the Part IV practical exam; international activities; examinee services, security, exam administration, and test accommodations.
Attending the leadership forum were officers of the Student American Chiropractic Association and representatives of the Student International Chiropractors Association, World Congress of Chiropractic Students, and American Black Chiropractic Association.
New Dean of Northwestern College of Chiropractic
Renee DeVries, DC, DACBR, is the new dean of the Northwestern Health Sciences University (NHSU) College of Chiropractic, filling the position vacated by NHSU Provost Michael Wiles, DC, MEd, in June 2009. Dr. DeVries is a 1989 graduate of Northwestern and has been involved with the university in various capacities for the past 16 years, including serving as an assistant professor, chairing the Department of Diagnostic Imaging and directing radiology consulting.
"I feel very honored to be named Dean of the College of Chiropractic," said Dr. DeVries. "As a graduate of Northwestern and a longtime faculty member, I have strong loyalty to this institution. I have the greatest respect for the members of the faculty and will work hard to support them as they continue to improve the curriculum and the educational experience for our students. I am excited about the future of the college and look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead for our graduates."
2010 Drugless Researcher of the Year Named
Parker College of Chiropractic recently honored its Drugless Researcher of the Year honoree for 2010: Cheryl Hawk, DC, PhD, vice president of research and scholarship at Cleveland Chiropractic College. The award recognizes long-term contributions to non-pharmacological health care research. Dr. Hawk heads the Cleveland Chiropractic Research Center and is well-known as a leading chiropractic researcher. She was named the American Chiropractic Association's Researcher of the Year in 2003 and received similar distinction from the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research in 2005.
"For most of the profession's first 100 years, chiropractic's success was built on the backs of satisfied and grateful patients. But in recent decades, it has been research that has fostered credibility and increased awareness and has opened doors advancing this profession," said Dr. Carl S. Cleveland III, president of Cleveland Chiropractic College. "With great pride comes the knowledge that Cleveland's own VP for Research and Scholarship, Dr. Cheryl Hawk, is now the inducted into this Hall of Fame."
NPCO Recruiting Race Team for 2010 Chicago Marathon
The Non-Profit Chiropractic Organization (NPCO), which fielded a race team 82 members strong at the 2009 Chicago Marathon, is looking for even greater participation this year at two Chicago events: the Chicago Half-Marathon on Sept. 12 and the full marathon on Oct. 10. Registration is underway as of Feb. 1 and according to the NPCO, race spots are limited.
Participation is not limited to doctors of chiropractic; last year, the team included doctors, patients and others running with a common vision: to promote chiropractic and raise money for the NPCO. All team members receive a personalized donation Web site, among other benefits (race T-shirt, weekly support, training program), with an overall team donation goal this year of $100,000. The NPCO will use all funds raised to open nonprofit clinics in Third World countries and educate their local communities about the benefits of chiropractic.

Many relevant diagnostic signs are not performed deliberately by the examiner or by the patient at the examiner’s direction. They are observed as the patient reacts to their condition. Fortin’s finger sign, Minor’s sign, and Vanzetti’s sign are three examples of this principle.
Spearheaded by burgeoning scientific and clinical research literature, psychedelics have reached a level of media coverage and popular interest that has not been seen for over half a century. By “psychedelics,” we are referring to the unique class of substances that includes psilocybin (the active compound found in so-called “magic mushrooms”), LSD, dimethyltryptamine (DMT), ayahuasca, 5-MeO-DMT, and mescaline – each of which occurs in the natural world (except for LSD, which is a semi-synthetic compound).
While working at the Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque, N.M., one of the primary care physicians stated that imaging every patient prior to receiving chiropractic was not medically necessary. It was at that point I reconsidered the need for the imaging of every patient to avoid malpractice.
