The 11th International Conference on Back Pain and Manipulative Sciences, co-sponsored by the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) and the Consortium for Chiropractic Research (CCR), will be held October 17-18 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at CMCC.
The theme is "Vertebral Subluxation Revisited" with a focus on the recent advances in subjects pertaining to the vertebral subluxation: terminology, basic and clinical sciences; a teaching model; and patient management.
The general assembly topics will include: "Subluxation Complex"; "Kinesiopathological Model"; "Clinical Diagnosis"; "X-ray Diagnosis"; "Modes of Treatment"; and "Influence of Autonomics."
Attendees may also choose two of six workshops: "Improving the Reliability of Palpation"; "Neurophysiology and Neck Rehabilitation"; "Consensus on Terminology"; "Motion Assisted Adjustments"; "Examining Excessive Motion"; and "Chiropractic Technique and the Subluxation."

Thomas Bergmann, D.C., "The Kinesiopathological Effects of the Subluxation Complex"
Editor of the Journal of Chiropractic Technique and a consultant to Medicare. Dr. Bergmann co-authoring a new text, Chiropractic Technique.
Patricia Brennan, Ph.D., "Systemic Effects of Spinal Manipulation"
Named "Researcher of the Year" by the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (see July 3, 1992 issue of "DC"), Dr. Brennan received her Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology. She served as a clinical microbiologist at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics before joining Argonne National Laboratory as a research scientist, a position she held for 18 years. She is currently the dean of research at National College and also serves as chair of the FCER Research Advisory Council.
Peter Cauwenbergs, Ph.D., "Influence of the Autonomics"
Dr. Cauwenbergs, an associate professor of anatomy at CMCC, is one of the pioneers in developing chick embryo neural tube transplantation techniques.
Leonard Faye, D.C., "Managing the Patient"
Dr. Faye is a well-known chiropractic lecturer who co-authored with Richard Schafer, D.C., Motion Palpation and Chiropractic Technic, and authored Goodbye Back Pain. Dr. Faye was official chiropractor with the Canadian Olympic Track & Field team in 1984.
Meridel Gatterman, M.A., D.C., "What's in a Word?"
Dr. Gatterman is the director of the CMCC Division of Chiropractic Sciences, and author of Chiropractic Management of Spine Related Disorders.
Ronald Gitelman, D.C., "Applying the Science to the Art"
Dr. Gitelman is a fellow of the College of Chiropractic Clinical Sciences. He has lectured extensively and authored many scientific papers on manipulation and back pain.
Adrian Grice, D.C., M.Sc. "Clinical Diagnosis"
Dr. Grice is a fellow of the College of Chiropractic Sciences (Canada), and faculty member at CMCC. He has served CMCC as director of research and chiropractic science. Member of the editorial boards of JMPT and Chiropractic Technique, he is contributing author to Dr. Haldeman's book, Principles and Practice of Chiropractic, and Upper Cervical Spine by Howard Vernon.
Chuck Henderson, D.C., Ph.D., "Neurophysiological Model"
A fellow of the Palmer Chiropractic College Research Institute and full-time researcher, Dr. Henderson has taught gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, and research design at Palmer.
Charles Lantz, D.C., Ph.D., "Subluxation Complex"
Dr. Lantz received his Ph.D. in pharmacology and is director of research at Life West. He has spoken on chiropractic to audiences in South Africa, Belgium, and throughout North America.
William Meeker, D.C., MPH, "Subluxation Measurement as an Outcome: Issue and Answers"
Currently the dean of research at PCCW and president of the Consortium for Chiropractic Research, Dr. Meeker serves on the editorial boards of JMPT and Chiropractic Technique. In 1990, he was named to the board of directors of the American Back Society (ABS), and in 1991 he was honored as "Researcher of the Year" by the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research.
Robert Mootz, D.C., "Subluxation: Modes of Care and Classification"
Dr. Mootz is a professor at PCCW and director of manual medicine at a large multi-disciplinary industrial medicine clinic in San Leandro, California. He is currently conducting a clinical trial on the efficacy of chiropractic care and exercise in the treatment of acute industrial low back injuries. Dr. Mootz chairs the Committee on Interprofessional Relations of the American Back Society and has published and lectured extensively on chiropractic.
John Taylor, D.C., DACBR, "X-ray Diagnosis"
Dr. Taylor did his radiology residency at LACC and is presently a research fellow in osteoradiology at the University of California San Diego Medical Center.
Howard Vernon, D.C., "Contributions from Basic Sciences"
Dr. Vernon is a fellow of the College of Chiropractic Sciences and CMCC associate dean. He is director of the Centre for the Study of Spinal Health, and a member of the International Association for the Study of Pain.
In addition, a panel discussion, "Applying the Science to Art," will be hosted by DCs Leonard Faye, Ronald Gitelman, and Adrian Grice.

Many relevant diagnostic signs are not performed deliberately by the examiner or by the patient at the examiner’s direction. They are observed as the patient reacts to their condition. Fortin’s finger sign, Minor’s sign, and Vanzetti’s sign are three examples of this principle.
Spearheaded by burgeoning scientific and clinical research literature, psychedelics have reached a level of media coverage and popular interest that has not been seen for over half a century. By “psychedelics,” we are referring to the unique class of substances that includes psilocybin (the active compound found in so-called “magic mushrooms”), LSD, dimethyltryptamine (DMT), ayahuasca, 5-MeO-DMT, and mescaline – each of which occurs in the natural world (except for LSD, which is a semi-synthetic compound).
While working at the Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque, N.M., one of the primary care physicians stated that imaging every patient prior to receiving chiropractic was not medically necessary. It was at that point I reconsidered the need for the imaging of every patient to avoid malpractice.
