Sports Tuina for Common Shoulder Instability

The author of this article explains that tuina is an important component of traditional Chinese manual medicine and joint manipulation. It aims at preventing and treating disease by applying manual methods to remove obstructions in the Chinese "meridian pathways" in ways and for purposes not unlike those of chiropractic.

The article describes sports tuina as "a hands-on technique implementing combinations of acupressure, acupoint identification, soft tissue massage, and bone setting techniques.

It provides detailed explanations and illustrations of how tuina can be used to deal with such sports injuries as shoulder instability. In the process, the reader gets a short course in various tuina techniques. Clinical tests and diagnostic assessments, drawn from both eastern and western paradigms, are also discussed.

This article suggests that a combination of ancient Chinese philosophy (as implemented through tuina) and western diagnostic methods could help practitioners achieve a higher level of sports injury care. The general approach and specific information should be of particular interest to doctors of chiropractic.
