Over-the-Counter Nicotine Patch Works

Transdermal nicotine patches are widely used to help smokers give up their damaging habit.

An article in the American Medical Associations Archives of Family Medicine reports on a study of 802 adults (average age 39, 89% white, 54% female) with a smoking history of at least 20 cigarettes smoked each day for a year.

Nicotine patches were provided at four shopping malls and guidance was limited to package instructions.

After the 6-week study and 18-week follow-up, results showed the over-the-counter patches to have permitted 19.5% of the smokers to quit (defined as 4 consecutive weeks of total abstinence from smoking). Patients in a no-treatment control group had quit rates of 7.5%.
