Screening for Osteoporosis Risk

Dual-energy x-ray absorptionometry (DXA) is a diagnostic medium ideally suited to rapidly, accurately and efficiently measuring bone mass of the radius and is a strong predictor of future fracture.

The test has seen little use in rural areas. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to see if the same accuracy in measuring bone mineral density was possible using 5 DXA machines in a remote, rural hamlet in mainland China.

The authors found that DXA was a reliable screening instrument in the remote area. They also found that age and mean body mass index were the strongest predictors of radius bone mineral density in the group studied. A further finding was that correlation between bone mineral density in the radius was lowest in younger females but correlation became stronger with age.

The bottom line was that low bone mineral density is the single most important risk factor for osteoporosis.
