Trends in Managed Care and Chiropractic: Will They Go Away?

A recent national survey suggests that the current health care surveillance and regulatory system is in need of fundamental improvements. The survey findings, coupled with a recent federal report by the Institute of Medicine on "medical mistakes," emphasize key challenges that must be met by the chiropractic profession in the new millennium.

This article discusses "chiropractic's millennium megatrends," with particular attention paid to chiropractic, managed care, and Internet-savvy consumers.

The author forecasts several measures that will be instituted to hold chiropractors more accountable for their actions, including:

* measurement of doctor performance by managed care organizations;
* development of guidelines by actuaries and managed care organizations; and
* national standards and indicators for doctor performance.

The author presents his "key points" for practitioners as summary:

* The chiropractic profession must prepare for the changing health care environment.

* Increased chiropractic involvement in managed care will affect reimbursement and payment rates.

* Managed care plans will also impact chiropractic in terms of cost/outcome comparisons and professional standards.

* Consumer acceptance of alternative medicine will boost chiropractic but may also create more competition.

* DCs will have increased presence in hospitals, health systems and multidisciplinary clinics.
