Pediatric Psychotropic Drug Usage Reaches Adult Levels

Increased prescribing of psychotropic drugs for behavioral or emotional problems in children is a highly publicized health issue. Knowledge about usage of these drugs in different regions across the U.S.

may answer questions about the legitimacy of providing these drugs to children.

Researchers evaluated data on approximately 900,000 children under age 20 enrolled in one of three health-care systems: a Midwestern or mid-Atlantic Medicaid program, or an HMO organization in the northwestern U.S. Data were analyzed for each year from 1987 through 1996.

Results: Total use of psychotropic medications increased by 2-3 times in the three systems over the 10-year period, reaching 6% of youths younger than age 20; this was true for most classes of these drugs. Most of the increase in drug prescriptions occurred in the last five years of the study period. Stimulants, including methylphenidate (Ritalin), accounted for much of the increase; Ritalin accounted for 77-87% of stimulant use. Stimulants and antidepressants ranked first and second across all three health-care systems, with the most dramatic increases in amphetamine use - up to a 14-fold increase in children enrolled in the HMO system. Psychotropic medication usage in general was significantly greater in the Medicaid populations than the HMO population.

Conclusion: Utilization of psychotropic medications in youths nearly reached adult usage levels over a 10-year period in the 1990s.
