Chiropractic Needs to Focus on Geriatric Population

The striking increase in America's elderly population led to this assessment of chiropractic geriatric education, which included surveys of Geriatric Education Center directors, geriatric educators at a sample of nine chiropractic colleges, and chiropractic practitioners; an analysis of the nine chiropractic colleges' geriatrics course syllabi; and focus groups involving chiropractic researchers, educators and practitioners.

Results indicated that the most significant limitation in chiropractic geriatrics education is the lack of clinical exposure to geriatric patients.

Other important barriers to chiropractic inclusion on interdisciplinary teams are the lack of baseline and outcome data on the use of chiropractic care among the elderly, and the limited number of existing formal collaborations between chiropractic and other institutions and agencies. Strategies for improvement both at the institutional and practice levels are needed.
