Managing Otitis Media: Adjustments instead of Antibiotics

Medical doctors routinely treat inner-ear infections with antibiotics or over-the-counter medications; this type of intervention often provides only temporary relief and can cause a number of adverse side effects.

Chiropractic management of otitis media can involve a variety of manual, dietary and lifestyle interventions. This study reviews the risk factors for the development of otitis media and proposes evaluation and intervention strategies which chiropractors can use in their practice. Strategies may include:

* cervical manipulation;
* auricular adjustments;
* soft-tissue manipulation;
* tympanic ventilation;
* endonasal massage.

Also included is a discussion of physiotherapeutic techniques (i.e., using heated oil drops, a heating pad, or a hair dryer) and dietary/nutritional considerations (testing for food sensitivities and vitamin deficiencies, etc.). Chiropractic intervention offers an alternative to the traditional procedures used by the medical community to treat otitis media.
