Getting Workers Back on the Job

Back pain remains the most expensive industrial injury, the most expensive musculoskeletal problem overall, and the most common cause of disability in people under 45 years of age. Even more startling perhaps is the observation that less than 10% of these cases account for more than 80% of the costs.

This article identifies chronic disability risk factors and discusses factors relating to modifiable aspects of health care delivery.

The authors explore such issues as patient monitoring, case management and return-to-work options, along with:

* the chiropractic role in workers' compensation;

* delivery practices to improve outcomes/satisfaction;

* clinical management strategies; and

* specific communication/reporting strategies.

In addition, the authors, all of whom are intimately involved with health care policy, provide a useful glossary of terms related to occupational health. They also offer several examples of performance attributes for quality chiropractic occupationally focused health care.

Incorporating occupationally focused management and communication strategies at the individual practice level may be a key step in resolving workers' disability issues and developing good working relationships between the business community and the chiropractic profession.
