Chiropractic Chapter in Veterans' Health Handbook

Chiropractors Bart Green, Andrew Dunn and Claire Johnson are co-authors of chapter 6 of the Praeger Handbook of Veterans' Health, a four-volume set covering various topics related to VA health care.

Volume II of the book, edited by Thomas Miller and now available in print and as an e-book, contains six chapters including Veterans With Diabetes in Primary Care, Neurological Healthcare for Veterans, Cardiology Care for Veterans in VA Healthcare, Veterans' Sacrifices Made in the Quest for Cancer Treatment, Mental Healthcare in the Veterans Health Administration – and Chiropractic in Veterans' Healthcare.

The chapter 6 introduction provides an overview of the material discussed by Drs. Green, Dunn and Johnson: "This chapter provides an historical overview of the inclusion of chiropractic care in VHA, describes how this newest offering to veterans functions in the VHA system, and explains how veterans may access care. The chapter also discusses policies relevant to access to chiropractic care, future developments, and new directions."

Dr. Green is a chiropractic physician at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego; Dr. Dunn is lead chiropractor in the VA Western New York Healthcare System. Dr. Johnson is a professor at National University of Health Sciences and serves as editor in chief of the university's three peer-reviewed publications, the Journal of Manipulative & Physiological Therapeutics, Journal of Chiropractic Humanities and Journal of Chiropractic Medicine.

CMCC Honors Two of Its Fallen

Editor's note: The following tributes to Drs. Herbert Lee and Ronald Gitelman, respectively, are reprinted with permission from Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College.

Dr. Herbert Lee — Dedicated DC, CMCC Founder, Great Friend

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Herbert Lee at 101 years of age, a month away from his 102nd birthday on Nov. 5. Dr. Lee was the longest lived and last surviving founder of CMCC. He passed peacefully in Toronto on Oct. 3, 2012.

Dr. Lee made a phenomenal contribution to chiropractic. He was one of a handful of great men who committed to founding CMCC as an educational institution and as a unifying force to chiropractic in Canada. Dr. Lee was part of the steering committee which founded CMCC, and gave its inaugural lecture at CMCC's first location, at 252 Bloor Street West, in September 1945, when the lecturer failed to arrive. He continued this tradition, giving the first lecture at the 1900 Bayview location when it opened, as well as the first lecture at CMCC's current campus. He continued lecturing well beyond retirement age, remaining a faculty member at CMCC for almost 60 years.

"Dr. Lee has been a stalwart of CMCC, imparting his knowledge of technique to multiple generations of chiropractors," said CMCC President Dr. Jean Moss. Dr. Lee offered monthly seminars on adjustment techniques while he was well over 90 years old. Dr. Herbert Lee was considered a great friend by those privileged to know him.

Remembering Dr. Ronald Gitelman, CMCC Class of 1961

Dr. Ronald Gitelman (Class of '61), a chiropractor who left an impact on CMCC and on the profession as a whole, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 7. Dr. Gitelman served CMCC in many capacities, including as a faculty member, administrator and researcher at the institution from 1964 to 1981, before going on to serve as a distinguished member of the CMCC Board of Governors. He was an instrumental figure in the creation of CMCC's graduate programs.

Dr. Gitelman had his research presented at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes (NINDS) conference in the United States in 1975, a significant achievement for a chiropractic researcher at the time. He also founded the Archives, a collection of research papers related to chiropractic. The Archives served as a precursor to the Chiropractic Research Archives Collection (CRAC), which led to the establishment of the Index to Chiropractic Literature (ICL).

Beyond the collection of information, Dr. Gitelman worked as a chapter writer in the first edition of Dr. Scott Haldeman's Principles and Practice of Chiropractic.

Dr. Gitelman has included CMCC as a beneficiary of memorial donations with the creation of a research fund, The Dr. Ronald Gitelman Project, to support research on the physiological responses to cervical spinal manipulation. Anyone interested in contributing to the fund in Dr. Gitelman's memory may contact Melody Craggs at .
