A distinguished list of speakers, a variety of continuing education classes, and a unique plenary session devoted to chiropractic's identity are just a few of the anticipated highlights of the Florida Chiropractic Association's 2006 Annual National Convention and Expo. With professional roots dating back to 1931, the FCA will celebrate 75 years of service to the chiropractic profession at the convention, scheduled to be held at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Kissimmee, Fla., from Aug. 25-27.

This year's event will feature an estimated 70 speakers and a plethora of continuing education sessions focusing on such diverse topics as workers' compensation; clinical documentation and CPT coding; laser treatment; weight management; advances in radiology; professional boundaries; integrating nutrition into practice; applied kinesiology; lower extremity examination and diagnosis; and early detection of melanoma.

The 2006 convention will kick off on Aug. 25 with a plenary session devoted to the "identity of chiropractic," with particular emphasis on how the changing health care world will affect the profession, and how doctors of chiropractic can improve their ability to adapt to such changes. Featured speakers/topics at the plenary session include:

  • Scott Haldeman, DC, MD, PhD: "Changing Chiropractic Identity and Practice in the Era of Evidence-Based Health Care."

  • Paul Barach, MD, MPH: "Quality and Safety in Health Care."
  • Liston Bochette, PhD: "The Future of Chiropractic in the Olympic Arena."

For the second time, the American Chiropractic Association's Sports Council will hold its annual Sports Sciences Symposium, Reception and General Membership Meeting in conjunction with the FCA convention. David Chapman-Smith, secretary-general of the World Federation of Chiropractic, will lead off the council sessions with a discussion of "The Legal and Professional Status of Chiropractic and Sports Chiropractic Worldwide in 2006." Other sessions will cover the science of stretching; kinesio, functional and athletic taping; Olympic chiropractic; running and osteoarthritis; and other topics.

The ACA Council on Occupational Health's Annual Chiropractic Health Symposium also will be held during the FCA convention, with sessions covering such topics as management of upper-extremity cumulative trauma disorders; returning patients to work; trends in occupational health care; onsite workplace wellness; and performing DOT physical examinations and drug and alcohol testing.

This year's vendor expo will feature more than 300 exhibitors offering chiropractic products and services to the profession. Expo hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Aug. 25, 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 26, and 7:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Aug. 26.
