Life Hosts Visiting WHO Rep. from Japan
World Health Organization (WHO) representative Mitsuo Homma, MD, a rheumatologist and professor emeritus from Keio University School of Medicine in Japan, recently toured Life College on a site visit to evaluate the college's capacity to fill its voluntary role in an international subacute back pain study initiated by the WHO. Dr. Homma visited Life's Research Center to establish that it would be capable of acting as a data collection site for the WHO study.
Life's Research Center is only one of several institutions worldwide collecting data for the global project which will look at low-back pain through different disciplines to test and compare different methods of care, including chiropractic, acupuncture, and cryotherapy. Centers around the world performing the research are in such diverse regions as Russia, Indonesia, Brazil, Chile, Canada, and Japan. The centers will send their test results to Life on computer disk for compilation, and the college plans to design a data collection program specifically for this project.
Dr. Homma is responsible for the data collection structure of the study, and he conferred with colleagues at Life regarding planning the design. "Because the Japanese people can have different kinds of back pain than other races, I am concerned about how to structure data collection," said Dr. Homma. "I want to see what types of outcome measurement are most suitable."
Life freshman Silah Misoi, a native of Kenya, led the cross country team to a second place finish at the 1996 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national championships in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Misoi broke a NAIA cross country record by 20 seconds, while beating his nearest challenger by 41 seconds. Life's Sammy Nyamongo finished in third place.

Life's strong finish in the NAIA championships capped a winning 97-1 season record. Over the last two years, the team posted a 213-3 mark with losses only to national champ Lubbock (Texas) Christian University and Notre Dame University.
In women's cross country events, Life's Tumaini Urio was knocked down less than a half mile from the finish and could not complete the race, but teammate Josphine Kandie finished third overall.
Life cross country runners Misoi, Nyamongo, Biwott, Kosegi, and Kandie were 1996 All Americans. The Life team is coached by Mike Spino.
At recent ceremonies at Life College, commencement speaker Jim Sigafoose, DC, accompanied his son Carey across the stage to received his doctor of chiropractic from Life President Dr. Sid Williams. Carey is the youngest of Dr. Sigafoose's six children, all of whom are now doctors of chiropractic. Dr. Sigafoose, a 1959 graduate of National College of Chiropractic, is a 23-year member of Life College's Board of Trustees.
Many relevant diagnostic signs are not performed deliberately by the examiner or by the patient at the examiner’s direction. They are observed as the patient reacts to their condition. Fortin’s finger sign, Minor’s sign, and Vanzetti’s sign are three examples of this principle.
Spearheaded by burgeoning scientific and clinical research literature, psychedelics have reached a level of media coverage and popular interest that has not been seen for over half a century. By “psychedelics,” we are referring to the unique class of substances that includes psilocybin (the active compound found in so-called “magic mushrooms”), LSD, dimethyltryptamine (DMT), ayahuasca, 5-MeO-DMT, and mescaline – each of which occurs in the natural world (except for LSD, which is a semi-synthetic compound).
While working at the Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque, N.M., one of the primary care physicians stated that imaging every patient prior to receiving chiropractic was not medically necessary. It was at that point I reconsidered the need for the imaging of every patient to avoid malpractice.
