NCC Student Donates $25,000 to the College

Editorial Staff

Mr. Michael Silbert, an 8th trimester National College of Chiropractic (NCC) student, presented NCC President Dr. James Winterstein with a donation check for $25,000.

Mr. Silbert is the grandson of the late Theodore H. Silbert, a successful New York banker and philanthropist. Before he died in May 1992, Theodore Silbert established a charitable trust to be managed by his six surviving grandchildren, of which Michael is the oldest. When the grandchildren met to discuss which organizations they wanted to support through the charitable trust, they decided that NCC would be included in the group. During the donation ceremony, Mr. Silbert told Dr. Winterstein that the charitable trust will make a similar donation in the next year. The money will go toward the acquisition of an automated system for access to information that is not available on campus in the Learning Resource Center.

Dr. Winterstein praised Mr. Silbert's generosity: "I thank and congratulate Michael Silbert and all the members of his family who participated in this decision. I am personally very proud that a student would undertake this effort. Michael, I salute you!"

DC Olympian Retires from Competition

Four-time Olympian Terry Schroeder, D.C., captain of three U.S. Water Polo Teams (see story in September 1, 1992 issue of "DC"), recently announced that he is retiring from competition to devote more time to chiropractic, coaching, starting a family, and guiding up-and-coming athletes. "I have decided not to go for the '96 Olympics," Dr. Schroeder said. "I've had a thrilling and productive athletic career, and now it's time to move on to other goals."

Winner of three Olympic medals, Dr. Schroeder will continue as head coach of the Pepperdine University water polo team, which he has led to the national playoffs six of the past seven years. During those years he has divided his time between his Pepperdine coaching duties, training for the Olympics, and maintaining a chiropractic practice with his wife Lori.

Chiropractic Video to Be Available at Blockbuster Video Stores

South Carolina chiropractor Dr. Keith W. Wassung has arranged to have Blockbuster Video, one of the America's largest family video chain stores, stock a chiropractic video in its community education section. The video, which educates on chiropractic treatment and the importance of having the entire family's health maintained by a chiropractor, will have a toll free 1-800 number to request a packet of follow-up chiropractic information materials. Each packet will list a "point of contact" for a chiropractor in the viewer's area, enabling the person to call for more information and a family check-up. For information on how to be part of this list, contact Dr. Wassung at 1-803-875-9532, or write to him at 710 Beech Hill Road, Summerville, South Carolina, 29485.

WSCC Appoints New Chiropractic Science Chair

Richard Stonebrink, D.C., FACO, professor of chiropractic, was appointed chairman of the chiropractic science division at Western States Chiropractic College (WSCC) Feb. 1, 1993.

Dr. Stonebrink reported that his first priority is to determine how the college can prepare chiropractors to meet the increasingly complex demands of practice in the '90s. "One of the ways we hope to do that is by examining how we integrate the basic, clinical and chiropractic sciences as well as clinical diagnostics, chiropractic techniques, and management courses," he said. "Our goal is to teach more material in greater depth with less superficiality, redundancy, or omission."

A 1954 graduate of WSCC, Dr. Stonebrink is one of only 10 members of the prestigious Faculty of the International College of Chiropractic and was one of nine DCs selected internationally to serve on the RAND Corporation's Spinal Manipulation Consensus Panel in 1991. An author and seminar speaker, he developed the syllabus for the chiropractic orthopedics diplomate program used by many chiropractic colleges.
